Some of you out there have been asking your self "what is a #hashtag and what do they mean?". Well, we will let you in on the secret.
That's a vary common question and I will brake them down for you. A #hashtag is any word, phrase, number or combination of words and numbers that are followed by a #hashtag symbol "#". This little symbol instantly turns whatever you want into a searchable and clickable link. Example: If you posted a photo on Instagram of a beautiful snow day and you typed #ILoveWinter, it would turn your #hashtag into a link. Thus, archiving your photo with all the other photos with #hashtags of "#ILoveWinter". The reason for these #hashtag links are to be able to click on #ILoveWinter and see all the other photos with the same #hashtag, #ILoveWinter. #Hashtags also give you the opportunity to search photos on Instagram that have #hashtags of a specific photo your looking for. A great example is someone that loves pictures of baby kittens can search #hashtags on Instagram for #BabyKittens and you can indulge your self around cute baby kittens for days.
This #hashtag system has been adopted by many other social media websites such as FaceBook, Twitter, and like I mentioned above, Instagram as well as many other websites. So next time you're on your FaceBook reposting something from your best friends company page, a post you really enjoy or even your own posts add a few #hashtags to make your posts more searchable. #ILoveMyJob.. #FinallyItsFriday.. #HashTagsRule.. please be mindful when using #hashtags, although they are fun, don't over #hashtag your photos and posts only a couple will do the trick. Posting to many can be cluttered and come across as spam.
Here are a few examples of #hashtags being used:
